RONGAI - 7 DAYS

Overview

This is the best short Kilimanjaro route for a less physical challenge in the lesser travel path. The path leads through much drier side of the mountain.

KILIMANJARO ROUTE HIGHLIGHTS

    • Rongai is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north.

Arrive Moshi, Tanzania
Kili Treks Tanzania staff member will greet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport upon arrival and transfer you to your lodge.
Overnight:  Kilimanjaro Wonders Hotel
Start Trek to Simba Cave Camp
You will be met by porters and guides then served lunch at the Rongai gate. After lunch begin walk to the first camp. The walk is at a leisurely pace through timber forest and into the natural forest.

Overnight: Simba Cave Camp (6,600 ft. / 2,000m)
Trekking time: 2-3 hours

Simba Cave Camp to 2nd Cave Camp
On this day you will continue to enjoy the magnificent view of Mawenzi peak as you trek toward Kibo peak. Enjoy stopping to see the exotic heath-zone, flowers and plants which grow alongside the trail. Upon arrival at second cave camp you will be welcomed to a hot lunch.

Overnight: 2nd cave Camp (11,300FT / 3,450M)
Trekking time: 3 – 4 hours

2nd Cave Camp to Kikelelwa Camp (Acclimatization day)
Begin by heading toward east. The track leads into the short heath, and so best views of Mawenzi peak as you hike. Take your time to enjoy the scenery and take lots of photos. You will arrive at the camp right for hot lunch.

Overnight: Kikelelwa Camp (11,800FT. / 3600M)
Trekking time: 6-7 hours

2nd Cave Camp to Kikelelwa Camp (Acclimatization day)
Begin by heading toward east. The track leads into the short heath, and so best views of Mawenzi peak as you hike. Take your time to enjoy the scenery and take lots of photos. You will arrive at the camp right for hot lunch.

Overnight: Kikelelwa Camp (11,800FT. / 3600M)
Trekking time: 6-7 hours

Kikelelwa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Hut
The trek begins by going uphill into the different shrubs then emerges on to the moorland and eventually into the stark highland desert. On a clear day, enjoy the stunning sight of Kibo peak as well as Mawenzi as you are heading towards the camp.

Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Hut (14,160FT / 4,315M)
Trekking time: 3-4 hours

Mawenzi Tarn Hut to School Hut.
Because of the cold wind blowing from the saddle, temperatures drop as you gain elevation to the Kibo Hut. Have your fleece gloves and hat handy. Use the rest of afternoon to make right decision with your guide about the clothing for the night. Dinner will be server earlier than previous nights to allow an early rest.

Overnight: School Hut (15,585FT / 4,750M)
Trekking time: 4-5 hours

School Hut to Uhuru Peak / Horombo Hut.
Summit push day. You are awoken before midnight to eat, and then depart for the summit. After 5 – 6 hours of hike you will reach the rim of the crater at Gillman’s Point (18,750 ft. / 5,712 m). The trail to the summit from Gilman’s point is less demanding. The coldest time is between 03H00 – 06H00 (-10 to -20° C) 14 F – 4 F. You will spend sometimes at Uhuru peak depending on the weather condition. You will descend back to Kibo for a shorter rest and something to eat then continue down to Horombo for overnight.

Overnight: Horombo Hut (13,200FT. /3,950M)
Trekking time: School Hut to Uhuru peak 6-8 hours / 4-5 hours to Horombo

Complete Trek / Returning home or continue with adventure
After a restful night’s sleep and a heartily breakfast you will start to descend to the Marangu gate. Reluctantly you will say goodbye and board vehicles to back to your hotel. This will mark end of your Kili trek, for those catching flight home.
